Guyana will be looking to dethrone defending champions Antigua and
Barbuda at the 18th World Council of Dominoes Federation
Championships. The Biennial World Dominoes Championship kicks off
today with several teams competing for the title and bragging rights.
Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Barbados, the United States and
St. Lucia will be going head to head at the Carifesta Sports Complex,
Carifesta Avenue. Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton said
that Guyana is proud to be hosting such a massive tournament.
Minister Norton pointed out that domino is more than just a mere game
and is used to promote unity among people of different backgrounds.
This, he said, can be seen with the gathering of the different teams
for the competition.
> “This is why we are most pleased that the world council chode Guyana as its host country for this significant tournament, not to mention that it is the fourth such opportunity we have had in the last two decades” the minister stated.
However, he called on the teams not to let it take away from their
competitive spirit and hunger for winning. Minister Norton called on
the home team to make their mark in the competition.
“Guyana you have to make your mark because in the last two decades of
domino competition at this level Barbados won it 10 times” the
President of the Guyana National Domino Federation, Faye Joseph called
on all competitors to put this best game forward in a battle for the
championship. Joseph said that domino is seen globally as a grassroot
sport enjoyed by all. However, Joseph’s hope is that one day domino
can become an Olympic sport. Guyanese are being called upon to go out
and support the games and the home team.
