Students attending schools within the Upper Takutu Upper Essequibo Region (Region Nine) are now beneficiaries of a smart classroom located within the Lethem Learning Resource centre. This is a first for the community.

The Smart classroom was the brainchild of the Ministry of Education in partnership with NCERD and the Regional Democratic Council. It was commissioned yesterday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry.

In attendance, were students of Arapaima Primary School and St Ignatius Secondary.

Minister of Education, Dr Nicolette Henry encouraged the students to grasp the multitude of opportunities they will be afforded with the use of the centre.

“We are working to ensure we have 21st century teaching methods in our schools, and the smart classroom initiative is an important component of technology-enabled learnings. This will bridge the gap in some ways and what this will do is bridge the hinterland and the coastland in some ways,” Minister Henry explained.

Student of St Ignatius Secondary School, Allesandra Ng-A-Fook has plans to become a computer software programmer. She believes the addition of the use of the smart classroom in her school’s curriculum will propel her towards her dream.

“There are a lot of benefits, some students who are slow book learners can see what is there and can actually hear sounds, see for themselves and explore and use the internet to browse and get answers for their work,” she said.

The smart classroom is equipped with a smart board for interactive learning, internet access and houses a resourceful e-library.

This project is in keeping with the aim of the Education Ministry to provide enhanced learning opportunities for all.
