Regional tourism projects showcased
Representatives from across Guyana today presented their flagship tourism projects to stakeholders and government agencies at the Regency Hotel, which was held with the aim of regional tourism stakeholders soliciting support to advance and develop their projects.
Minister of Business with responsibility for Tourism, Dominic Gaskin said the government has been engaging regional representatives to better understand the resources available to push local tourism.
“As a government, we cannot sit in Georgetown and believe we know everything and can run things centrally, especially in the area of tourism. That is why we decided two years ago, that we would try to get the regions involved in as much as possible in the development of tourism around Guyana.”
Explaining the reason behind the flagship project, Director-General of the Department of Tourism, Donald Sinclair said: “There are expatriates in this country who fly out to sister Caribbean islands for their weekend vacations; if we do not create safe and attractive experiences for this market that outbound tourism trend will only intensify.”
Sinclair said that through the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), new marketing and product development initiatives have been created to further enhance regional tourism.
Alluding to this, Director of the GTA, Brian Mullis said the agency is in the process of creating a Destination Development and Management Action Plan, to map tourism attractions, sites and other tourism facilities to be placed on the agency’s website as a means to promote regional tourism.
In 2017, a team from the Department of Tourism visited the regions to garner the views of stakeholders on tourism attractions and market appeal. The regions were tasked to identify tourism hotspots to promote tourism at the regional level.
