The foreshore along Columbia and Aberdeen, Essequbio Coast, Region Two is now protected by a 700-metre brushwood dam. Construction of the $23M infrastructure project commenced in July and was completed September month-end. The contractor, S&K Construction & Consultancy Services & General Supplies, completed the project one month before schedule.

This project, which is part of the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI)’s mangrove restoration efforts, has a three-month defects liability period.  The contract was signed in July last, between the Chief Executive Officer of NAREI, Dr. Oudho Homenauth and Ms. Keshiri Gajraj, representative of the contracting company.

The Institute has been investing in coastal infrastructure to enhance mangrove restoration along the Essequibo Coast due to the high potential for mangrove recovery in the Region. In 2017, the agency spent $33M infrastructure in Region Two to enhance sedimentation and create a suitable environment for mangroves to be resorted. These included installation of 100m of geotextile tubes in Reliance to a tune of $13.8M; and construction of brushwood dams along the foreshore of Land of Plenty to Bush Lot to a tune of $19.2M. In 2015, extension works were done to the Bamboo Brushwood Dam at Walton Hall.
