‘Healthy Wholly’ Summer Camp to be launched tomorrow

Healthy Wholly Summer Camp is slated for an official opening tomorrow at the Sophia Special School located at Lot 4 Exhibition Site, Sophia Complex, Greater Georgetown. The Summer Camp will be opened by the reigning Miss World Guyana, Ambika Ramraj.

At the opening too she will also announce the launch of her ‘Miss Ramraj’s Beauty with a purpose project’ for the Miss World competition where she will add her voice to champion the cause of childhood trauma and the effects it has on mental health.

“Healthy, Wholly” summer camp aims to increase the learning capabilities of youths by tackling any mental health issues they may be experiencing due to some form of childhood trauma via the use of sports and physical activities.

The program is being introduced to the Sophia Special School which is bridging the gap between mainstream and special needs learning. The school primarily functions as a rehabilitative institution that provides for its students to learn vocational, academic and life skills. The students comprise of children who are slow learners, those who have never attended school, as well as those who have performed poorly in secondary schools.

The program is scheduled span a period of six weeks. In the sessions they will be taught about mental health and the link it has to the overall wellbeing.

Students will be exposed to a variety of sports/ physical activities such as basketball, karate, dance, archery, football, etc. They will also be able to learn certain skills, and earn certificates for those skills, e.g. First Aid Training, sewing, cake decorating, etc. Students will also have to attend mandatory Social and Emotional Learning programs, which will be held once per week. These sessions will teach them specific traits/ qualities necessary to become successful adults. The overall aim of the six weeks training is to improve the lives of each of the youths by giving them a fair chance to succeed.
