On Sunday, October 16, 2016, Guyana’s first female figure monument was officially unveiled at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre. This monument and it’s unveiling marks the beginning of a number of festivities celebrating the coconut. The Guyana Coconut Festival is slated to begin on October 28th and the new monument, named ‘Lady Coco’ was just the kick off it needed.
Lady Coco signifies “A Tree of Life” and represents the versatility, strength and nurturing women provide in society; likened to the coconut tree.
The monument features a towering female quenching her thirst with the contents of a coconut. It is made partially from coconut tree products among other natural products and was designed by Gerry Gittens to whom tribute was paid at the unveiling ceremony by Miss Guyana Universe 2016 Soyini Fraser.
Even after the festival has passed, Lady Coco will stand to remind everyone that the coconut is indeed the fruit from the tree of life.
