Having a bucket list might not be such a bad idea. What’s the point of being alive if you don’t live some right?
That is the exact mindset of 52 year old Deryk Rugbeer. Deryk has been able to cross “swimming across the Demerara river” from his bucket list.
He undertook this feat yesterday despite the tide being against him. Mustering the courage and all of his energy, supplemented by the support of onlookers and family, he was able to complete the task in just a matter of 24 minutes. A time he said that he could’ve beaten had he not have to swim against the tide.
His inspiration to do this actually came from his childhood while growing up in the vicinity of the Stabroek market. He related that he would usually go to the back of the market and look across and wondered if he could swim across.
In 1984, he and his family moved to the United States and somehow the dream got overshadowed until yesterday.
Rugbeer maintains that a good diet and staying in good health enables you to do anything; persevering and not giving up easily is also the key to success.
