As the time goes by we will focus on some of the well known but lesser known about places in this beautiful country of ours. That place this week is Carifesta Avenue.
Located next to Thomaslands, adjacent to the famous Kitty Seawalls lies Carifesta Avenue; spanning a total of 1.62 kilometres, extending from Vlissengen Road, Kitty to Camp Street, Carifesta Avenue is one of the main access points into downtown Georgetown. And though most persons casually take that route daily from the East Coast of Demerara into Georgetown, there is more to the road than meets the eye. The stretch of land was designed and landscaped for the purposes of easily accessing and facilitating the events held in the National Park for the first ever Carifesta, held in Guyana in 1972. From that point, there has been constant development of the route, including the recent splitting of the highway and installation of street lights with the flags and coat-of arms of each of the member states of CARICOM. Driving along Carifesta Avenue, it is easy to see the rich culture of our people as well as the fast paced advancement that we are steadily undergoing. Some of the sights to see include, The 1823 Monument, the Guyana Earth Station, The National Park, The Monument to the Child, The Young Men’s Christian Association and the Everest Cricket Ground to name a few. So the next time you travel along that specific route, take the time to look and you might just see something you didn’t notice before.
