Some citizens have returned to their old habits of littering. This has compromised the integrity of the drainage system and placed an additional burden on limited resources.
This is according to a statement issued by the Mayor and City Councillors of the city of Georgetown.
It was revealed that the Council observed that several businesses within the central business district are in breach of the Municipal Law which states that every premise should be equipped with the requisite refuse receptacle.
This has contributed to litter placed on the parapet and other public thoroughfares. An environmental campaign done in the Robbstown area revealed that of the 43 premises that were inspected: 17 premises were without bins, three had bins that were unsuitable and 23 had bins that were suitable.
The owners of the premises that were found without receptacles were served with statutory notices which give them 14 days to comply or face the necessary court action.
The Council is therefore calling on all property owners to ensure that they comply with laws and ensure that they have requisite bins, since it is a requirement by the law.
