Through the ‘Come Alive Network Incorporated’ [CANI], the issues of Trafficking in Persons, Suicide and Community development affecting Guyana and Suriname were brought to the fore. The event was the inaugural International Exchange programme of the CANI which was conducted during the period June 29 – July 3, 2017 in Paramaribo, Suriname.
Come Alive Network Incorporated is a Not-for-Profit and Non-Governmental Organisation registered under the Company Act of the Republic of Guyana with operations in Guyana and New York, USA.
As a part of the exchange, a youth development workshop was held on the 30th June, themed: “Self-Worth and Team Development Exercise.” This session facilitated by CANI saw the attendance of approximately 50 youths living in Paramaribo.
Extensive research and analysis was undergone in order for CANI members to be able to present and engage the participants on relevant points. This was also done to entertain informed discussions on possible ways in which both Governments and civil society can actively work on combating these issues. This included the fight against human trafficking, especially in the interior regions, engaging young people with more strategic approaches to alleviate the cases of suicide and forms of support that can be rendered to communities to promote social cohesion and security.
Participants lauded the engagement and were evidently enthused to carry on an open discussion on their social realities and how they affect the youth populace. They admitted that such an engagement made by CANI is unconventional as young people may see the problem but are unlikely to organise themselves into a movement to actively address such for results. This exercise deemed a, “conversation starter,” ended with CANI networking with the young leaders as well as committing to areas of mutual interest which can be addressed as a collective in an effort to make both countries more conducive.
CANI’s has gained support from corporate Guyana including: Hand-in-Hand, John Fernandes Ltd, Action Coach-Guyana, Guyana Public Service Co-operative Credit Union, Merriman’s Funeral Home, The Carter’s, National Insurance Scheme, Ministry of the Presidency- Department of Citizenship and Ministry of Public Health.
