The quality of lumber sold by local saw-millers was among the concerns raised by contractors who were yesterday engaged by the Central Housing and Planning Authority [CH&PA]. Raising this particular concern was not in vain as Minister within the Ministry of Communities, with responsibility for housing, Ms. Valerie Patterson has given assurance to the contractors that she will have a meeting with saw-millers.

CH&PA yesterday engaged with 40 pre-qualified contractors on the construction of duplexes at Perseverance, East Bank Demerara. The Agency will be constructing a total of 40 duplexes in Perseverance. The first phase of this development is scheduled to commence on August 5, with the construction of five single-story concrete duplexes.

Yesterday’s meeting was also attended by officials from the Guyana Forestry Commission and the Guyana Revenue Authority.

The collaboration with the Guyana Forestry Commission, saw contractors receiving information pertaining to the specifications of lesser used wood species such as; Tatabu, Shibadan, Manni, Determa, and Tauroniro that are incorporated in the design of the houses.  The Guyana Revenue Authority provided contractors with details on zero rated and exempt items in the construction industry as well as the service tax to be charged on the finished products.
