Contracts signed for green agenda projects

The Ministry of Communities has signed a total of six contracts with a cost in excess of $107M. These contracts are being undertaken in keeping with its mission to build, cohesive, empowered and sustainable communities and the vision to improve infrastructure, ensure proper sanitation management and promote Guyana’s green agenda through the creation of green spaces.

These contracts fall under the following categories: Green Agenda, Community Infrastructure Programme and Sanitation Management.

Three of the six contracts are for the construction of green open spaces; one of which will be constructed at No. 76 Village Corentyne, (East Corentyne/Berbice).

The other two are for the construction of the Lethem Declaration Park (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) and the construction of Sparta Recreational Park, Anna Regina (Pomeroon/Supenaam)

The Ministry’s aim is to create Green Open Spaces that filter pollutants and dust from the air, provide shade and lower temperatures in urban areas, and reduce erosion of soil into our waterways.

This is being done with a view to providing an environment for safe recreational activities while fostering community cohesion.

The facilities include parks or community centres and will feature green construction, green energy and greenery.

The green space initiative is being undertaken through a commitment by the Government of Guyana, under the Green State Development Strategy to develop a green economy.

This will ensure the sustainable management of natural resources. The aim is also to balance economic growth with the preservation of the country’s environmental treasures for generations to come.

The scope of each green space consists of: construction of sanitary facilities, benabs, benches, walkways; landscaping; and the setting up of solar systems for lighting and power outlets.

These green parks and boulevards will encourage safe social activities, improve the aesthetics of the towns, promote community development and can be used for the purpose of revenue generation within the townships.
