As part of efforts to build the skills of staff members and with an overall view to the development of Guyana, two Foreign Service Officers will embark on summer training exercises in July in China and Mexico.
From 10 to 14 July, Foreign Service Officer in the Department of the Americas, Ms. Sondra Cheong, will participate in the Summer School on Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation for Diplomats of Latin America and the Caribbean in Mexico City where regional diplomats will benefit from training on the analysis and importance of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, the multilateral process on the negotiation of treaties on nuclear disarmament and on the developments and perspectives regarding nuclear weapons and the nuclear fuel cycle. Guyana participated in the programme in 2015 and 2016.
Meanwhile, Legal Assistant in the Frontiers Department of the Foreign Ministry, Mr. Lidon Charles, will join young leaders from China, Latin America and the Caribbean from 11 to 20 July for “The Bridge to the Future: Training Program of 1000 Young Leaders China-Latin America”. This initiative was first proposed by President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jingpin during a visit to the region in July 2014. It aims to deepen bilateral cooperation through an exchange of dialogue and experiences.
Mr Charles’ professional training in diplomacy of small states, diplomatic law and multilateral diplomacy, among others, has prepared him to engage with young professionals and meet representatives from different governmental institutions in China while learning about issues related to current political affairs and diplomacy in as well as the economy of that State.
