GBTI introduces VISA cards with chip

Written by

The Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry Limited now offers its customers a more secure and advanced way to shop for the things they need with our migration to the VISA EMV (chip cards.) EMV which stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa — is a global standard for credit cards that uses computer chips to authenticate (and secure) chip-card transactions.

GBTI has moved forward with this initiative for its VISA Gold and VISA Classic credit cards as   well as the VISA Travel Classic pre-paid card.

The introduction of the micro-chip technology carries with it a myriad of benefits to its users; it reduces fraud, thus, making credit card transactions more secure and enhances the overall customer experience. The embedded microchip on the card stores data more securely, preventing it from being easily copied or altered. The unique Personal Identification Number (PIN) means that only you can use your card and do so securely. These cards are also globally accepted, including in Europe and in the UK.

The chip card technology now uses a “dip” of the card in the slot at the bottom of the terminal instead of the “swiping” of the card. This will be the only difference that customers will see once they use the chip cards to purchase from merchants.

GBTI is asking that existing customers visit the Card Centre which is located at the Regent Street Branch or visit a Branch closest to them to request their replacement cards. Persons who wish to apply for these cards can also visit the Card Centre or any Branch closest to them to experience the security of GBTI’s Visa Chip cards.

According to the Bank the issue of security is one of paramount concern among its customers, and thus it is always looking at ways of protecting its customers in whatever way possible.
