Focus on increasing the participation of females in the Chess arena is being touted by the Guyana Chess Federation [GCF]. Plans in this regard were shared with Minister Nicolette Henry who holds the portfolio for Culture, Youth and Sport within the Ministry of Education.
On Tuesday the GCF Executive Body paid a courtesy call on Minister.
Representing the GCF was President, Attorney at Law, James Bond; Businessman, Mr. Frankie Farley; Vice President of Development, Attorney at Law, Ms. Yolander Persaud; Vice President of Sponsorship and Finance, and Committee Member Anthony Drayton.
The Executive of the GCF informed the Minister of the plans of the Federation to integrate Chess in schools and to establish for the first time in Guyana a Chess and Scholastic Centre which will be named after Maurice Broomes who was a former National and Caribbean Chess Champion.
The Minister was enthused learn of at the Federation’s plans to focus on increasing female participation by hosting women’s tournaments and piquing the interest of young girls across Guyana.
She, moreover, pledged her support to assisting the Federation in acquiring a home for its activities and also making provision for other board games such as scrabble to have a permanent and conducive space.
Expressing her vision for facilities that are modern and well equipped, Minister indicated that her Ministry is in the process of building capacity amongst her staff to better manage such facilities in order to guarantee optimum involvement and deliverables in and from the use of such facilities. The Minister has given her full support to the work of the Federation and indicated that her Ministry has an open door for the GCF and any other sport discipline.
