Global Handwashing Day

It might not be expected but there is such a day as Global Handwashing Day and it is observed every year on October 15, 2016.

It is actually an annual global observance and it advocates for the increase in awareness and understanding of handwashing and its importance. It also promotes the idea that washing your hands with soap is an easy, effective and affordable means of preventing diseases and as such saving lives.

In observance of this day, here are the key steps in going about washing your hands:

  1. Place your hands under running water, ensuring it gets wholly wet.
  2. Using soap, liquid soap, foam or any other soap product, lather your hands by rubbing them together. Don’t forget the back of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails.
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds.
  4. Rinse well using clean water.
  5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry system.

Here are also some instances where you must always practice thorough hand washing:

  • Before, during and after preparing food
  • Before eating
  • Before and after caring for the sick
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound
  • After using the toilet
  • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
  • After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing into your hand
  • After handling pets or pet food
  • After handling garbage
