Brazil–Guyana relations have traditionally been close. Brazil has provided military assistance to Guyana in the form of warfare training and logistics. Bilateral relations between the countries have recently increased, as a result of Brazil’s new South-South foreign policy aimed to strengthen South American integration.
From all indications these ties are geared to be further strengthened with the construction of a new permanent Embassy in Brazil.
Just last week Vice-President and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge and Minister of Public Infrastructure, the David Patterson, turned the sod in a ceremony to mark the construction of a permanent chancery for the Guyana Embassy in Brazil. Work on the new building is due to begin shortly in Brasilia.
Undersecretary-General for South America, Central America and the Caribbean in the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Paulo Estivallet Mesquita, also participated at the sod turning ceremony.
