Guyanese Woman Stalls Brexit

Brexit has actually been one of the topics of interest for the past few months. What it entails is the self removal of Britain from the European Union. Now, elections were held and the citizens of England had voted in favour of Brexit and leaving the European Union but the final decision remained with the British Parliament. Given this power, Parliament is able to vote whether or not to stay in the EU. If the majority of votes from the members of Parliament go toward Brexit then there will be a formal leaving of the European Union by said country.

However, there is a way to bypass the parliamentary votes, so as to prevent those who are against Brexit to have their say. This is facilitated through Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty- which can actually start the formal process of Britain leaving the EU without a vote in parliament. Using this to her advantage, Theresa May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was in the process of triggering this same action.

Her plans were for nought so far though, as Guyanese-born Gina Miller, a 51 year old businesswoman and philanthropist led the Brexit bombshell which cause May to lose some of the control that she had since becoming PM. Miller is the lead claimant in the historic action that thwarted the UK’s plans to trigger the mentioned article. She was able to challenge the recent Brexit decision in court and won on November 13th after three of UK’s most senior judges agreed with her that the government is legally required to pass an act of parliament before initiating Britain’s formal departure from the European Union.

She is an investment banker born in Guyana and left to live in the UK at the age of 10 years. She obtained her education in London and currently runs an investment company with her husband, Alan. Even though she is receiving vast amount of support for her actions, she is also seeing quite the number of trolling and abuse (especially racist abuse) from the masses. This has not kept her from her goal to fight to maintain all inclusion and giving persons who can make a change the power to do so.
