GWI spearheaded upgrades for hinterland communities

The Guyana Water Inc. [GWI] has advanced a number of hinterland water supply projects in Regions One and Nine to date with the aim of improving the livelihoods of the beneficiaries.

For instance, the community of Yarakita in Region One now has full access to a water supply system from a well, which is a reliable source of water. The Water Supply System, which is powered by a photovoltaic system, serves approximately 786 persons within 157 households. The Schools which house 250 students and health facilities, will be having access to the water supply system via transmission lines and stand pipes placed at strategic points in the community.

In addition, job opportunities were created in the management of the system for its successful operation and safety. The total cost of this project is $ 14,999,500.

In Mabaruma [Region 1], the Hosororo Stretch will experience an extended supply of water and increase in level of service, sincean additional storage tank was installed to complement the Wanaina Pump Station at a cost of $4,963,096.

There has also been upgrading of service connections for homes within the vicinity of Port Kaituma Airstrip at a cost of $26,193,904. The community members of Arakaka, Matakai in Region 1 will also be the beneficiaries of a potable water well to be drilled at the cost of $3,000,000.

Also GWI has partnered with Pan American health Organization (PAHO) to undertake a Water Supply Improvement Project in the Yorungparu community, located in the South Pakaraimas, Region Nine. PAHO will provide the funding to the tune of $3.9 M to undertake this project.
