Hurricane Matthew is perhaps one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes seen in recent years. It is expected to cause flooding and landslides as passes through Jamaica and Haiti.
The fast-approaching hurricane, a Category Four storm based on the Saffir-Simpson Scale, could bring up to 40 inches of rain.
Jamaica have already been hit by heavy rains and winds, with floodwaters blocking roads in the Kingston as well.
Haiti, on the other hand could be dealt a more severe blow when the hurricane passes over the country’s south-west.
Persons have been urged to stock up on food and water and secure their homes. However one of the major problems is that thousands are still living in tents following the 2010 earthquake.
The mayor of Haiti’s largest slum in the capital Port-au-Prince, Frederic Hislain, has urged the government to evacuate some 150,000 people whose homes are threatened.
Hurricane Matthew is later expected to reach eastern Cuba, where a hurricane alert is in place for six eastern provinces and residents are being moved from low-lying areas.
