International Teacher’s Day 2016

Today, Wednesday, October 5th, marks the celebration of International Teacher’s Day.

The observation of October 5th as World Teacher’s Day was initially  done in the year 1994 and commemorates teacher organizations worldwide.

The main aim of the day is to gain international support and recognition for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers. It was done to bring awareness to the profession and those who make education their lifelong career.

There are over 100 countries who celebrate World Teacher’s Day, Guyana being no exception with schools across the country, private and public having their own means of celebration. This year, it was announced that some schools will take the day off from formal lessons and will allow teachers to get a much needed ‘free’ day. However some schools have decided to have classes only half day, taking the other half to hold mini-concerts and to show acts of appreciation to teachers.

Yet some schools have taken the day off to show appreciation to their teachers through the presenting of gifts, school lunch, among others. No matter the means of celebration, Guyana has been first and foremost in letting our teachers know just how much they mean. Without teachers, most of us would not be in the place we are today, so take that time out to show that special teacher, or those special teachers just how much their sacrifices and efforts mean.
