Japanese Govt. gives financial assistance to local grass-roots projects

Grant assistance to the tune of US$270, 510 has been made available by the Government of Japan for the Grass-roots Human Security Project scheme. Three strategic recipient organisations have been identified for this financial support.

The Project for the Construction of Skills Training Resource Center ( US $90,797) to be carried out by St. Francis Community Developers (SFCD) in Corentyne, Berbice, which will offer non-traditional skills training to the community’s population;

“The Project for the Construction of a Medical Service Centre” ( US $89,900), to be carried out by the Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development (Iwokrama), aimed at improving the quality of health and medical services available in the Iwokrama forest; and “The Project for the Construction of Multi-purpose Centre” ( US $89,813), to be carried out by Special Needs for Life (SNL), which will provide social services to residents in and around the village of Kuma.

Mr. Yoshinori Yakabe, Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Japan earlier today signed the grant contracts together with Mr. Alex Foster, President of SFCD; Mr. Dane Gobin, Chief Executive Officer of Iwokrama; and Mr. Mark Adams, Principal Executive Officer of SNL. Representatives of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs; the Ministry of Public Health; and the Ministry of Social Protection also attended.

The Government of Japan has expressed its desire to further opportunities to work with the Government and People of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, with a view to strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual understanding which exist between the two countries.

Formal Diplomatic Relations between Guyana and Japan were established on June 11, 1969.
