You have heard the saying “manners maketh man” right? But how many of us can actually boast that we indeed have excellent manners and how many of the already limited manners do we pass down to our children. Remember, children do not just learn by having you sit them down and instructing them on what or what should not be done; they also learn a great majority from your actions. The example you set is what all children learn from, so practicing simple manners yourself is enough to teach them what should be done. Here are some of the basic manners that you should practice and ensure that your children learn:
-Always say please when asking for something
-On reception, say ‘thank you’
-Never interrupt others when speaking unless there is an absolute emergency
-If you need someone’s attention, saying ‘excuse me’ is the most polite way to do so
-Always ask permission before doing something you’re unsure about
-Keep negative opinions to yourself or close friends
-Never comment, always compliment
-If someone asks how you are, tell them, then ask how they are
-Always say thank you for favours done even though you didn’t ask for them to be done
-Knock before entering a room with a closed door
-When making a telephone call, identify yourself then request for the person you wish to speak to
-Never use foul language in front of others
-Refrain from name calling
-Never make fun of or tease others, especially in front of your children
-At any performance, do not ‘boo’ or make rude noises, no matter how boring you think it is
-If you accidentally bump into someone, say sorry or excuse me right away
-Cover your mouth when you cough, sneeze or yawn
-Whenever you can, hold the door open for anyone following you into a room
-Do not belch or make rude noises when sitting at a table with others
