Toastmasters (TM) is an international organisation with a mission to empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders. Toastmasters in Guyana held its National Prepared and Impromptu Speech Contest on April 28, 2017. The winners were TM Tashi Browne in the Prepared Speech Contest and TM Nyozi Fraser in the Impromptu Speech Contest.
They will represent Guyana at the District 81 Conference held May 19 – 21, 2017 under the theme “One Love, One Heart, One People”.
The District 81 Contest will be on May 20, 2017. The Contest will feature participants from 25 Territories in the region, from Haiti in the North to Guyana in the South. Competition began with Club Contests and winners moved to compete at the Area and then at the National level. The Prepared Speech Contestants have five to seven minutes to present on any topic. The Impromptu Speech Contestants have two minutes to deliver on a topic that would be given at the Contest.
Speech Contests aim to build the confidence and exposure of Contestants by polishing the skills they have learnt from the Toastmasters education programme There are five speech competitions held every year, the Impromptu and Prepared Speeches in May, the Humorous Speeches and Speech Evaluations Contests in October and the Debate Contests in February.
Last October, TM Mizana Gonsalves won the 2016 National Humourous Speech Contest and represented Guyana at the District 81 Humourous Speech Contest in Curacao. She shared jokes about the Sticks showing that there are many sticks, such as lipsticks, mop sticks, sarcastic and many more, but the most important stick is for us to stick together. There were 12 Regional Contestants and she copped the second prize.
Guyana has two areas. Area 38 comprises of three corporate Clubs, Digicel Extraordinaires TM, Unicomer Pacesetters TM and Bank of Guyana Royale TM, and one community Club, Cacique TM Club. Area 39 comprises of two corporate Clubs, GAFSONS TM and MACORP TM and one community Club, Georgetown TM.
