The Ministry of Social Protection is educating its staff and other organizations on the development of Breast Cancer and best practices that will decrease their chances of getting the infection. The Ministry collaborated with the Organization for Social Health Advancement in Guyana (OSHAG) to hold a lecture session on the development, symptoms and treatment of cancer.

The lecture was conducted by Dr. Theophilus Lewis – Senior Oncologist and Director of the surgical Breast Cancer unit at the Kings County Hospital in the USA.

Deputy Director of Social Services – Ms. Abike Benjamin Samuels said, “the Ministry of Social Protection in keeping with its mandate stands ready and willing to assist in the fight against cancer in whatever way possible.”  She acknowledged the work of other organizations, noting that it is commendable to see what they have been doing to raise awareness during the month. Raising awareness about the issue requires dedication, commitment and passion and urged that activities continue beyond the month Benjamin-Samuels further stated. She said the involvement of so many different stakeholders will ensure cancer does not have a strangle hold on the nation.

Carol Trim Bagot – President of OSHAG said she is not of the view that Government can do everything on its own, she believes advocacy and civil society is important in the fight against cancer. The organization is currently raising funds to import a mammogram machine so persons who cannot afford treatment may be able to access it for free or at a reduced cost in Guyana. The organization opened the doors to their first local following the seminar. In January it is expected to start a support group for persons affected by cancer.
