Opposition Leader attends launch of Diaspora Democracy Centre in New York

At an impressive event on June 30 in Howard Beach, Queens, New York, the Diaspora community launched the International Center for Democracy (ICD). This is the newest Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) established in the Diaspora to support democracy and address developmental challenges such as poverty, climate change, suicide and other social justice concerns.
The ICD is an organization formed by immigrants who have established themselves in the USA and Canada.

Most of the members of the ICD are successful members of the Diaspora originating from Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti and other CARICOM countries, Venezuela, India and several African countries. For the launching members and supporters from across the US and Canada were in attendance.
Also in attendance were well-wishers from various organizations and from the Federal and State legislatures. A Representative from Senator Chuck Shucmer of the US Senate, as well as James Sanders Of the NY State Senate, Nick Perry of NY State Assembly and Representative Roxanne Persaud of the NY State Legislature, were present. Also in attendance were a number of officials from the NY City Government.
The Guest Speaker was Dr. Bharat Jagdeo in his capacity as one of the global leaders from developing countries in the fight against climate change and the need for a green economy.  Dr. Jagdeo in his remark congratulated the ICD for identifying the most important global challenges as part of their ambitious focus and goals. He specifically thanked the ICD for choosing climate change as one of their major areas of focus. Dr. Jagdeo who is also Leader of the Opposition in Guyana, has a long history in fighting for democracy in Guyana. Other speakers included Senator Saunders, Representative Perry and Representative Roxanne Persaud.
The ICD in the next several months will embark on an ambitious program that will include activities in New York, Guyana, Haiti and Venezuela. In addition, the ICD will be meeting with organizations, legislators and government officials in the US, Canada and the UK.
