The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) on Friday launched its Diamond Jubilee programme. The launch of the 60th Anniversary activities was held in the Hall of Heroes at the Party’s Secretariat, Congress Place, Sophia. The Diamond Jubilee will be celebrated under the theme, “United and Strong: 60 Years On”, which signifies the strength of the Party, and unity that exist within the ranks of its membership and supporters. This milestone is a testimony of the Party’s involvement in Guyana’s political, economic and social life and the long standing struggle of the Party for the betterment of all Guyanese.
In his welcome remarks, the General Secretary of the Party, Mr. Oscar Clarke, CCH, referred to the ideological and political beliefs of the Founder Leader, Mr. Forbes Burnham, and affirmed that “they are relevant to what is happening in this country now.” He said that the vision of Mr. Burnham were relevant in the early days of the Party and remains so now. These things, he said, must be recognized. Were it not for ideological and visionary foundation laid by Forbes Burnham, the PNC would not have the privilege of remaining a leading force in the political life of Guyana. In particular, the ideas that he has bequeathed to the Party have been a guide to successive leaders, including its current leader, Brigadier David Arthur Granger.
Chairman and Coordinator of the 60th Anniversary Committee, Annette Ferguson, MP, conducted a power point presentation on the activities that will be held to celebrate the Party’s milestone from May until December 2017. She listed a number of important events which will take place in all ten administrative regions.
Chairman of the Party, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams, SC, MP, delivered the featured address. He listed many of the Party’s achievements in every sector since it was founded in 1957, especially in the areas of Women’s’ rights, the opportunities it provided for the nation’s young people and its programme for national unity and religious equality. With regard to the Coalition Government, the Party Chairman outlined the many achievements in many areas of the nation’s political and economic life.
