The Ministry of the Presidency, Department of Environment is implementing the Strengthening Technical Capacities to Mainstream and Monitor Rio Convention Implementation through Policy Coordination. This is a four year project (2016-2020) funded by the Government of Guyana (GOG), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environmental Facility (GEF). The objective is to strengthen technical capacities for mainstreaming and monitoring the achievement of the Rio Convention. The project has four components –

1: Institutional Capacities for Mainstreaming and Monitoring;
2: Technical Capacities for Mainstreaming and Monitoring;
3: Awareness of Global Environmental Values;
4: Updating of the National Capacity Self-Assessment

At the end of the project it is expected that institutional mechanisms would have been strengthened to more effectively access and create new knowledge that reconciles and institutionalizes global environmental priorities within national sustainable development priorities. One of the main outputs is hosting of a National Awareness Workshop.

The objectives of this workshop are:

to sensitise the citizens at the national level on how to mainstream the Rio Conventions into their day to day activities, plans, programmes and policies and;

– to present what the Ministry of the Presidency, Department of Environment has done thus far in its mainstreaming exercises and the way forward.

Main speakers of the opening segment are expected to be the Minister of State, Honorable Joseph Harmon and the Director of Environment, Ms. Ndibi Schwiers.
