Promoting Agri Tourism In Guyana

Written by

In light of November being designated as Tourism Awareness Month, the Ministry of Tourism is seeking ways to craft policies in the aim to boost agriculture tourism and create awareness of the sector’s importance.

It was actually the recently held coconut festival that sparked a renewed interest in the concept. Not only that, but there was a realization of the vast potential for agriculture tourism in Guyana through coconut based products among others.

In order to make this a reality, collaboration has to be done among the Ministry of Agriculture, agricultural stakeholders and tourism entities.

One of the major benefits of this will be the provision of a market for the sale of produce provided by both small and large scale farmers. It is not limited to coconuts and has a wide variety of applications; as wide as the amounts of produce on the Guyanese land.

Agriculture tourism would include visiting farms, factories, hosting of harvest and agricultural festivals and publicizing agricultural heritage sites.

Efforts will be made to intensify agriculture tourism and tourism as a whole  in 2017, though making it more sophisticated and streamlined. This was according to the Ministry of Tourism.
