Pupils rewarded for outstanding Environment-friendly projects

Connecting people to nature” was the theme under which the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown held a poster and poetry competition for pupils in observance of World Environment Day 2017. World Environment Day is observed on June 5 annually.

Those whose contributions were outstanding were rewarded at a recent ceremony.

The purpose of the competition was to raise the level of awareness on current environmental issues at the city level with the pupils and to demonstrate to them how it is possible to connect with the environment in positive ways even as they were given an opportunity to display their creative abilities.

A total of 38 entries were received from participating school, for the poetry and poster competitions. The five best entries for poetry competition came from North Georgetown Primary with first place, Winfer Gardens Primary placed second, third place went to FE .Pollard Primary, fourth position was captured by St. Gabriels Primary and fifth place went to St Ambrose Primary.

For the poster competition, J.E Burnham Primary placed first, second place went to North Georgetown Primary and third place went to Rama Krishna Primary. Ms. Karen Roberts’s specialist for Non-communicable Disease of PAHO/WHO, delivered the feature address at the presentation ceremony. She reminded the pupils of the importance of connecting with the environment in positive ways and congratulated the Council for involving the children in such activities to promote good environmental health practices.

Immanuel Bridgewater Principle Education Officer Primary [ag] encouraged the pupils to put into practices all that were taught during the time of preparation. He also congratulated the teachers for the hard work in preparing them.

In addition, to the distribution of trophies, the schools were given different animals – rabbits birds – and aquariums and were encouraged to create special habitat for the nurturing and caring of them. The Environmental Sanitation Section would be responsible for inspecting, monitoring and evaluating the performance of the schools in this regards.

Meanwhile, the Council said that it will be launching a quiz competition on June next Monday. The purpose is to highlight the key roles of the Council in relation to Solid Waste Management, and raise awareness on the importance of climate change and global warming. Special emphasis would be placed on the role of the Council in mitigating some of the negative effects of these global phenomena.
