Students from 12 Primary and Secondary Schools in Region Four congregated at the Bladen Hall Secondary School to celebrate National Youth Week.
The event, which was chaired by Ossie Nedd, saw the school children displaying their talents in song, dance and drama. Most of the schools opted to recite national and folk songs in their presentations; all of which were well received.
This has been the third activity on the Ministry of Education, Department of Culture, Youth and Sport’s calendar of activities for the observance of National Youth Week and the nation’s 51st Independence Anniversary.
National Youth Week is a period where youth from all across Guyana engage fulfilled activities while at the same time gaining an opportunity to participate in youth development initiatives.
National Youth Week 2017 is being observed under the theme “Inspiring our Youth Celebrating their Achievements.”
Mr Earl Lambert, Regional Vice Chairman, in his remarks, highlighted the investments being made by the Government towards education. Mr Lambert pointed to the five ‘B’s (Bus, boat, bicycle, boots and breakfast) initiative promoted by His Excellency, President David Granger. Through this project, school children, especially those in the outlying areas, are provided with the essentials to ensure they receive an education.
The Vice-Chairman urged the students to take their education seriously. “You need to grab your education with both hands,” he said.
The objective of this Regional Youth Folk Expression is to allow youth to showcase their hidden potential through folk songs, poetry, dance, etc. and for stakeholders to support in inspiring youth and to celebrate the achievements as the Ministry of Education, Department of Culture Youth and Sport seeks to re-energise patriotism back into society.
National Youth Week activities are set to continue today with a Youth Exposition at Durban Park where a number of agencies from the public and private sectors will be mounting booths displaying the services and opportunities they have to offer to youths.
