Region Three launches Education Month 2018

In a combined effort the Department of Education, Essequibo
Islands-West Demerara, Region Three launched Education Month 2018,
whilst also honouring senior citizens for their contribution to the
education sector.

The launch was held this morning, on the lawns of the education
compound in Region Three. The month of activities will be hosted under
the theme, “Education for A Good Life Through Innovation and STEAMS”
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, Spirituality).

The activity also saw Regional Education Officer, REdO Annesta
Douglas, Senior Guidance and Counselling Officer, Priscilla Gonsalves,
several Education Officers, volunteers and public-spirited citizens
delivering breakfast to over 200 senior citizens at the Vreed-en-Hoop
Post Office, West Bank Demrara.

Douglas, in her remarks, said “Senior Citizens have made their
contributions to education in our Region and by extension the country
and regardless of whether it was direct or indirect, their
contributions have us where we are today and for that, we must be
grateful. Today, we are extremely happy to recognise their input.”

The elderly citizens were appreciative of the tribute paid to them.
Dalrymple, a senior citizen, said “I am happy to be considered today.
You all have made my day and I am very happy.”

A series of activities will continue during this month which includes
face-the-community meetings on September 4, 7, 11 and 24 at
Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary School, Zeelugt Primary School, Essequibo
Islands Secondary School and Patentia Secondary School respectively.
All the sessions will begin at 13:00hrs.  Friday, September 7, has
been designated Regional Literacy Day and the Regional Literacy
Coordinator Rekha Singh will be organising an activity “Reading for
Patients” at the West Demerara Regional Hospital beginning at
09:00hrs.

Additionally, the Regional Spelling Bee Competition will be held on
September 17, at a venue to be announced. A Special Education Needs
Fair is planned for September 26, 2018, at the West Demerara Secondary
School at 09:00hrs.

The celebration’s penultimate activity will be a Teacher’s Impromptu
Dialogue Competition on October 4, at the Department of Education
commencing at 09:30hrs. The month’s activities will conclude on
October 5, World Teachers Day with a ceremony to honour all teachers.
