Serious crimes down by 11 percent – Police Force reports

There has been an 11 percent decrease in serious crimes. This is according to the Guyana Police Force [GPF] based on its record as at the end of August, 2017 when compared to the same period last year.

According to the GPF disseminated data, there was an 18 percent decrease in murder; a 16 percent decrease in robbery under arms where firearms were used; a five percent decrease in robbery under arms where instruments other than firearms were used; a 41 percent increase in robbery with violence; a 20 percent increase in robbery with aggravation; a 27 percent increase in larceny from the person; a six percent decrease in rape; an eight percent decrease in burglary; a 19 percent decrease in break and enter and larceny. Added to this, when it came to robbery where no instruments were used, the figure reflected the same as the corresponding period last year.

Relating to Murder thus far for this year, the GPF has outlined the various categories including: Disorderly – 39, Domestic – 15, Robbery – 12, Execution – 4, Unknown – 8 and Others – 2: amounting to a total of 80.

The Police Force was also able to increase its seizure of firearms this year. Based on the data 89 illegal firearms have been seized thus far for 2017 compared to 53 for the corresponding period last year. Among those seized were: 55 Pistols, 11 Revolvers, 14 Shotguns, nine Rifles, all amounting to 89.

The majority of the firearms were seized in Police Division A, amounting to 40 followed by F Division with 22. Divisions C and D were able to seize eight each while Division E seized four. There was however none sized in Division F.
