The Psydium

Written by

This week in Guyanese fruits, we feature the psydium.

We may not know much about this little wonder fruit, but I bet we all can agree that in its ripest form, it is by far one of the best tasting on the market.

The psydium is the fruit of the Flacourtia indica tree, which is native to the Caribbean, the majority of Central America and parts of South America; which explains why we can find it so plentiful in Guyana in its season.

In as much as we can find it in troves when it is in season, the fruiting season comes as a rarity, occurring only twice for short periods during the year. First in March and then in July, which assures that you can get quite an amount for an affordable price at any market at the peak of the season in Guyana.

Here’s why you should get as much as you can:

Psydiums are a rich source of Vitamin C, which means that they are superb for your immune system. You want to keep away the cold or flu? Fruits like the psydium are amazing at helping to do exactly that. They also help to naturally lower blood pressure and help to prevent the buildup of plaque in arteries.

Take our advice, and get yourself some whenever you see them on those fruit stalls!
