The cream of the country’s Race-Walkers in all categories will match steps on Sunday February 18, 2018. The event by the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club is being dubbed the “Gavin Kennard 10k Memorial Race-Walk” in memory of one of the country’s most prominent sons – Minister of Agriculture and Guyana’s High Commissioner to Canada who passed away in Canada on Monday February 12, 2007.
The Race-walk will launch the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club’s 2018 Race-Walk Season.
The season will commence at 06:30hrs at the Guyana School of Agriculture, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara and proceeds to the road head before returning to place of origin for the finish.
The second Race-Walk will be staged on Sunday February 25th 2018 around the National Park, Thomas Lands, Georgetown starting at 06:30hrs
Trophies, Medals and Prizes will be at stake for the first top three finishers in the categories male and Female (seniors), juniors, veterans, and differently able participants.
Gavin Bonston Kennard CBE, CCH was the first Guyanese to be appointed to the high ranking post of Director of Agriculture. He was the Agriculture Adviser to the late Guyana’s President Forbes Burnham and Executive Chairman of Guyana Rice Board.
During his distinguished career he held many senior positions with the Guyana Government and with the Private Sector and was awarded many distinctions including the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) bestowed upon him by Her Majesty the Queen and the Cacique Crown of Honor (CCH) by the Guyana Government. Both attributed to his exemplary services performed in the country.
He worked relentlessly to develop Guyana’s Agricultural sector and improve the well-being of farmers. He passed away peacefully with continued dignity at age 86, on Monday February 12, 2007 in Canada.
