Movie-Towne and the University of Guyana [UG] have forged relations in order to pursue projects that will help to combat some of the financial challenges of the state institution.

According to Vice Chancellor, Professor Ivelaw Griffith, this has seen the University signing Memoranda of Understanding with Movie-Towne valued at some US$30 million [G$6 billion].

The Vice Chancellor explained that the collaboration with Movie-Towne entails the production and use of solar energy, and student housing.

According to Movie-Towne Chairman, Derek Chin, the solar energy plan is to install sufficient solar panels, capable of powering not only the entire Turkeyen campus, but the Movie-Towne Complex which is currently under construction.

Meanwhile, Professor Griffith explained that the student housing aspect of the collaboration, “will be a public-private partnership, they [Movie-Towne] will build, they will finance a building and we will have an agreement for students to use and pay.  That is important because so many of our students who live out of town really are taken to the cleaners by some of the proprietors around here,” related Professor Griffith.

The housing complex is expected to be outfitted with approximately 150 rooms and will add to the other housing facilities offered through the University with support from Corporate Guyana.
