Sherry: Professional Guyanese Cake and Pastry Chef
Sherry Boodhan Singh is a proud Guyanese who now resides in the United States of America in Queens. Sherry’s parents, of Hindu Guyanese decent, migrated to the US in early 1989. Mrs. Boodhan passed away when Sherry was just fourteen years old. While being alive Sherry learnt a lot from her mother about cooking various types of dishes and sweetmeats. After the passing of her beloved mother, her grandmother on her dad’s side moved in to live with them. This is when she learnt baking.
Throughout the years and at that time it was all about being a hobby and being lucky enough to have the learning experience of cooking/baking. She went on to study for her bachelors and master’s degree in Law at the St John University. In 2006, she was presented with her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and in 2009 she was presented with her Masters. After completing this, she decided to take a break before she applied to law school, for the road had been a challenging, exhausting, and dedicated one. Within this period of break-time, Sherry, being the vibrant, strong, active and accomplished woman she is, took a risk without knowing what the outcome would be and applied for pastry school. She then started baking cakes at home and fulfilling orders graciously. The result of the network was astounding. As she became more and more involved, the adrenaline and passion she had towards the kitchen became outstandingly her career path. This is when she knew she was done with law and wholeheartedly went into catering. The fire within her was fueled to reach the greatest heights with her talent. Sherry became a professional, vegan/non-vegan, traditional and ordinary, baking, making deserts, sweetmeats chef.
Sherry has been married for six years now to Mr. Gavin Singh. No kids as yet for they are both supportive of each other’s work paths of life, so they can both accomplish their goals in order to have their little family at last. Mr. Singh works in the family’s NYPD Manufacturing business.
Sherry has used her social media accounts, Facebook @Sherry Boodhan Singh and Instagram @cakesbysherry to advertise her catering business. Mrs. Singh has done exceedingly well and she is a few weeks away, specifically the end of fall, from being the proud owner of a store Front Bakery. Apart from the above mentioned food/confectionaries/sweets and desserts, this store front bakery will be unique in also serving allergy friendly, eggless, special diet consumers. Basically, a jack of all trades bakery.
On Diwali, Sherry gets requests to do special orders pertaining to the rules and regulations of traditions that this event is made up of. Apart from this last year, she had her own booth at the Diwali parade in New York and will be, yet again, participating this year. Sherry participates in her traditional values and morals as normal with her family on this auspicious occasion. She takes part in fasting, obviously preparation of sweets, food, etc, lighting of diyas, prayers and every other traditional traits that follow.
Sherry believes that this young generation has lost the value of knowing the importance of the hindu culture. It is vital to teach our kids the significance of Diwali, traditional sweetmeats/foods/desserts, etc. Pure knowledge of every aspect of your religion is a necessity and serves good purpose. One is never too old to learn. Sherry is a part of a Choka Lyme charity group. Two to three weeks before thanksgiving they do a food drive, whereby they donate can goods to churches, then the churches share out to the communities. Also, in the first week of December, before Christmas, they do one of the biggest toy drives in Queens with hundreds in attendance. As a contribution over the years to the hindu society, she has supported local and temple events with her delicious foods/sweetmeats.
“If you are going to pursue something, you have to give it your all, otherwise you are not trying hard enough to succeed. Success does not come without sacrifice” says Sherry. She also believes the world lacks compassion and as humans we need to live in harmony no matter the color of our skin and the denomination of religion we belong to.
