EXXONMOBIL DONATES US$40,000 IN LAB EQUIPMENT TO UG
The Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Guyana received donation for lab equipment costing in excess of US$40,000 from the oil giant ExxonMobil. Back in 2015, a section of the faculty was destroyed by fire after which a request was made to the company for assistance to aid in the replacement of equipment lost in the fire. A number of equipment were destroyed from various departments in the faculty and important critical research materials in various areas. The equipment was purchased from PASCO and OPT which arrived in Guyana in September 2018. As a result of the fire, the faculty was unable to efficiently conduct the physics programme. This is so since the required learning experience for students to successfully pass the course was inadequate due to the lack of equipment for practical work. According to the Dean of the faculty, there have been quite an improvement in the quality of educational experience in physics course. Graduates will therefore be prepared for roles in a more technological advanced economy including oil and gas which is of essence to the University and faculty.
After the devastating fire, ExxonMobil was the first and only major corporation to render assistance in the recovery process of which the faculty is thankful for. In addition, the company expressed gratitude towards providing support to the University and its students.
