Cabinet has approved the appointment of His Excellency Patricio Arturo Becker Marshall as Resident Ambassador (Designate) Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Chile to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. Ambassador (Designate) Becker Marshall will replace H.E. Claudio Rachel Rojas.
Ambassador (Designate) Becker Marshall currently serves as the Consul General of the Republic of Chile in Vancouver, Canada. Previously, he was Minister Counselor at the Embassy of Chile in Japan. He has also held several positions at Chilean Missions around the world including in Mexico, Australia and South Africa. He began his career in the Foreign Service following his graduation from the Chilean Diplomatic Academy in 1981.
Diplomatic relations between Guyana and Chile were established on July 22, 1971. With the establishment of the Embassy of Chile in Georgetown in 2015 bilateral relations have become increasingly active. Through bilateral cooperation, Chile has extended technical assistance on data collection through Chile’s National Service of Geology and Mining (SERNAGEOMIN). In 2017, through a bilateral arrangement between the Governments of Guyana and Chile, Foreign Service officials in Guyana benefitted from a course in Globalization and Global governments and Guyanese public servants were offered Spanish language training by the Government of Chile.
The two countries are commonly involved in a number of regional bodies, such as the Organisation of American States (OAS) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Chile also engages Caribbean Community (CARICOM) under the South-South Cooperation framework and the CARICOM- Chile Joint Commission.
