Retired Judge nominated to Chair Trade Union Recognition and Certification Board

Retired Justice Madam Claudette La Bennett has been nominated as Chairperson of the Trade Union Recognition and Certification Board. She has indicated her willingness to serve in the position as Chairperson for the Recognition and Certification Board (TUR&CB), according to a information released by the Ministry of Social Protection.

La Bennett’s nomination follows on the heels of a meeting between Minister Amna Ally and representatives of the Tripartite Constituency on a matter of consultation.

The basis of the consultation was to determine the Chairman of the Trade Union Recognition and Certification Board (TUR&CB).

TUR&CB is responsible for among other things certifying various trade unions so that workers’ rights can be legally and correctly represented. The Board endorses the recognition of unions as Bargaining Agents for workers.

Consultations were conducted with the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana who was represented by Mr. Dawchan Nagasar General Secretary, accompanied by Mr. Seepaul Narine, Guyana Trade Union Congress represented by Lincoln Lewis, General Secretary and the Consultative Association of Guyanese Industry represented by Mr. Samuel Goolsarran, Consultant/Advisor who all met with Hon.  Minister Amna Ally separately.

The consultations were done in the presence of Hon. Keith Scott, Minister within the Ministry of Social Protection, Karen Vansluytman-Chief Labour Officer (ag), Ministry of Social Protection and Sonia Philander, an independent Note-Taker.

There were two nominees for the position of Chairmanship of the Trade Union Recognition and Certification Board (TUR&CB) namely Mr. Grantley Culbard, Trade unionist and recommended nominee of FITUG’s and Retired Justice Madam Claudette La Bennett, who was endorsed by CAGI and GTUC.
